Point to Ponder

How would you choose to be remembered?

The earlier part of this year (2005) saw the loss of some close Toastmaster friends, as well as my next door neighbor, who was only 2 years older than me.

I spoke at Ron's service and reminded the family and friends of his many gifts, our great times of shared laughter and love.

Last week I attended a funeral of a 96 year old member of my extended family... my brother-in-law's aunt and grandmother to a close friend.

Makes you think!  When you lose someone close to you, it challenges you, in a very deep way, to re-examine your own life and activities. I know in 1999, when both my parents passed away, I made some serious and substantial changes in my life, my business and how I invest my time.

"This is the true joy in life: Being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one, being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances, complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it what I can. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handling it on to future generations."  George Bernard Shaw

I keep this quote on the wall in my bedroom, so it gets seen on a frequent basis. It serves as a visual reminder of my own desire to make sure I too, burn brightly and give solid value in everything I do.

Fellow author, speaker and former Edmontonian, Brian Tracy shared his wish to be remembered. His choice, "Brian Tracy had a profound and positive influence on improving the lives of millions of people." From what I gotten to know of Brian over the years, it appears he is well on his way to making this a reality.

My challenge for you this month is to revisit how you would choose to be remembered. I wish each of you a long and productive life. Productive is a subjective term - so however you define it - you can create it!

However, each of us has a specific time here on earth to accomplish what we may. We can choose to make a statement with our life and the legacy or legend that we create in living it. What is your choice?

As always, I would love to hear your experiences and share in your life statement. Drop me an email: bob@ideaman.net

What do you wish for?

Ever notice how you often get what you wish for?

Life is funny at times!

More so, when you are in business for yourself and have some leadership control over where you choose to invest your time.

There are times when you are so busy you really don't know where one project ends and another starts and you wish for some breathing room. Have you ever caught yourself feeling this?

Amazingly enough, you often get that wish. Why? Often it is due to your being too busy working in the business, to work on the business.

  • By working on the business, I mean spending time in strategic planning and development of new service and profit areas.
  • By working on the business, I mean investing time marketing and promoting what you do to current and prospective clients.
  • By working on the business, I mean investing time and resources in your own skills development.
  • By working on the business, I mean investing time in strategic play and creative indulgence. This will energize both your mind and your body.

When you are working in the business, your focus is on doing the jobs, engagements, projects that you have committed to doing... at times, just keeping up or keeping your head above water. The result of not investing time to work on the business is the gigantic roller coaster of cash flow and client engagement.

If you study North America's top companies and their leaders you'll find out they take regular time to strategically work on their businesses, to work on developing their teams and enhancing their skills, and to tweak what they are doing and to make it better.

Last minute notes and thoughts

October is flying by and November is quickly approaching.

What have you done today to build your business?

A challenging question I ask myself each day... in fact I have it in a plexiglass holder at eye level, as I type these words.

Two weeks ago I was in Calgary for the Internet Marketing Bootcamp I mentioned in my October issue. Over 300 eager potential internet millionaires were in attendance. It was a value packed weekend. I acquired lots of new information that will help me in my own efforts to make my various websites and internet ventures more productive and effective as well. I'll share some of the tips and tricks I learned in later issues once I have a chance to apply them and make sure I have anchored the lessons.

Some of these ideas will help me with my clients as well... making what I offer more attractive and allowing me to assist them in similar areas.  Also, as a result of the weekend and a conversation with one of the event staff I have 3 new domain names registered.  So look for information on motivation websites in our next few issue(s).

Just got back last night (Monday) from a quick visit to Vancouver and the interior of BC. Greg Gerrie (close friend from CAPS - he was president the year following my service) got married to Tina Ding on Saturday and I wanted to be there. Also had the opportunity to visit with friends, a former student and colleagues on this quick trip. One of the pleasures of being in this business is the people you meet who become very special in your life. I for, one am grateful for the people I am blessed to call friends.

What is happening in November:

As I mentioned in our October issue, I'll be presenting a 90 min. session on how to "Incorporate key strategies to accelerate employee success" on Thursday, Nov. 3rd, in Edmonton - at the launch of Canadian Institute of Management's "Leadership Strategies Management Development Seminar." (They plan to take this project across Canada in the upcoming year and are already working on Vancouver for spring 2006.) This will be a solid value day.

If you are within the greater Edmonton area, I invite you to check it out. This will be a good investment, if you want to 'Become a Leader Who Influences Others to Get Outstanding Results.'  They still have a few seats available for this content rich, influential day. Call now!

For more information or to register call: (780) 417-6693  or visit: http://www.westrandconsulting.com/ to register.

If you are in the London, Ontario area, I have the opportunity to be the closing keynote for D60's Fall Toastmasters Conference on Sunday Nov. 6th. District Governor John Rich (also a CAPS member) asked me last January in Scottsdale if I would come and speak. I'll be there for the whole weekend meeting some new friends. Many who know me, know I got my start as a public speaker and honed my skills in Toastmasters.

I consider it a great privilege when I get the opportunity to give back to this supportive organization and the friends I cherish. I hope to connect as well with some of the SWO CAPS members, as I will be in London Friday through Sunday.

Visit the D60 Toastmasters site:  for additional  information on this event. Perhaps, you can attend and learn more about how you can enhance your career or company by enhancing your abilities to listen, think and speak.

November 3rd I will be the opening Keynote Speaker for the Alberta Senior Citizens' Housing Association. Their theme is Managing the Winds Of Change! and they felt my story about my little sailing adventure (and typhoon encounter) from Hawaii to Japan would be a fitting start for this event. My friend and mentor, Peter Legge will be the closing keynote, so this is a very special opportunity for me. I love working with Peter as each time I see him in action I learn something.

November 26th I will hosting an Edmonton wide singles Christmas dinner for the 3rd year... guess they enjoy my MC work and I know I enjoy the turkey dinner.

November 28th (Monday) I will be speaking at the CAPS Halifax evening business development meeting. If you are in the area or know someone who is, come on over. I will be doing a session on the 8 Building Blocks of Success!

November 29th (Tuesday) I am conducting a full day Quantum Leap workshop on "Authorship and product development and promotion" presented by CAPs Halifax . We will be taking authorship to the next level with secrets from successful pros on websites, blogs, ezines and other exciting materials to make your business more successful. This event is not just for speakers, anymore. Visit: http://www.QuantumSuccess.biz for more details. We will also be discussing co-authorship in a new book "Quantum Success" that evening.

November 30th (Wednesday) I will be offering hourly coaching and consulting for anyone who wants to explore these ideas further and will be working hands on specific projects coaching clients bring to me. we'll be doing two larger group coaching sessions in the afternoon 1) websites, 2) blogs, ezines and podcasting. Call Ravi Tangri (902) 865-7076 to schedule your coaching session. Preference will be given to Quantum Leap participants and CAPS Halifax members.

Then it is off to our CAPS National Convention which runs Dec 1-4th in Ottawa-Gattineau. I am heading up the first annual CAPS Luggage Olympics. Should be fun. I'll tell you more about it later.

Note to Meeting Planners:

Are you are planning a meeting or event and want a no-cost, sponsored service to be able to invite and track those who are coming? Thought I would send this along to our readership again, and invite you to visit the skOOchie site and give it a spin. (www.skoochie.com)  You can pick a series of sponsors... but I would hope you'd select ours. We're being set up as a sponsor for our Successful Meetings site. If you have a sales meeting, wedding, reunion, group function, community event or other gathering... this is a great way to electronically connect, invite and track who will be attending.

This new service from Event IQ looks like a winner and could be something you might consider in your own marketing efforts. Drop me a line and tell me how you like it. Drop my friend Dave a note at: sales@eventiq.com if you'd like more information on how you can add this low cost, effective tool to your marketing arsenal. Tell him Bob 'Idea Man' Hooey sent you.

We also invite you to visit: http://www.successfulmeetings.info
