Point To Ponder

So now what?

Fall is now upon us and the summer is a softly fading memory. The days are growing shorter, the leaves are turning color and some are shedding already. Now what?

Where do you go from here?

Henry R. Luce who published "Time," "Life" and other magazines once wrote, "Business more than any other occupation is a continual dealing with the future; it is a continual calculation, an instinctive exercise in foresight."

Whether you are an entrepreneur, leading edge manager, or a rising star employee; taking time to consider the future, as you may encounter it, is one of the most important activities in which you invest. Your career is important - why not invest in it now!

Perhaps you took some time to reflect on your future and that of your team or company over the summer? Great! So now what?

  • Where do you go from here?
  • What changes are you going to initiate to re-invent yourself and ensure what you offer is more attractive and beneficial to your prospective clients?
  • What changes are you going to revise in your processes to make them more effective?
  • What investments are you going to put into your personal skills training and that of your team?
  • What is your 'next' move or 'next' level to strive for?

You see, each of us is continually making changes and decisions which affect our future.

I've been quoted as saying, "The best way to predict the future is to invent it or create it!"

That "creation" is an act of faith and a deliberate forward thinking action we take... we have the opportunity to take personal leadership in making our lives what we imagine and in making the lives of our clients, colleagues, family and friends, better than they ever imagined.

Drop me a line and let me know where you are "going" this fall: bob@ideaman.net

I hope you have taken at least a part of your summer to re-visit, re-think and re-focus your energies for the fall! Wishing you a very successful and productive fall. Only you, can make your September sensational! Can you feel the excitment as you boldly move into your fabulous fall season?

The Three Most Common Training Mistakes

You're probably making at least one of them now!

As a commited owner or manager or team leader, you may frequently make decisions to engage or contract on programs and policies that will either help or hinder your team in reaching their goals.

Unfortunately, training dollars will ultimately be wasted whenever leaders make some of the following mistakes.

Here are the more common ones to consider:

1) Failing to fully assess team needs.

2) Thinking (wishfully) that training sessions will eliminate conflict.

3) Thinking of training as a program vs. a process.

You can avoid making training mistakes by considering a few ideas, and side stepping some mistakes that, for others, have minimized returns on their training dollars.

I include this article in our September issue, as that is when many companies ramp up their training. Training can and should be a big investment in your future success. Training needs to be focused and effective.

I want to challenge you and perhaps nudge you a bit in making sure your training pays off for you and for your team. I'd love to help if I can!

How to succeed on the internet!

I finally got my 5 copies of my friend and e-mentor, Tom Antion's new book. And the wait was worth it!

I've already passed on two of them to close CAPS friends who are also working on increasing their effectiveness on the net. A third went to a special friend and creative colleague, Irene who is generously helping me with some of my new mini-websites.

When I get out to Victoria for a visit to my friend Joseph and the Transitional Media team, I'll probably take the remaining one along for their reference. They've been maintaining and helping me grow the www.ideaman.net site over the past few years.

I'm devouring mine... and every few pages I highlight another nugget of value for my creative efforts on the net. As some of you know, Tom shared some ideas with me in January when we were both in Scotsdale, AZ that have proved both helpful and valuable.

This book is like a treasure trove of tips, techniques and thoughts from his very creative mind. Tom claims to not be a techie; but inspite of that, he has learned to harness and productively leverage the power of the internet. You can too!

If you are serious about being competitive and remaining profitable in this new century - you need to buy Tom's book, devour it and step up and impliment it's easily applied secrets.

Your on-going growth and success will be determined by your web-presence and performance. Being available on-line is a valid part of any success strategy. I've been telling audiences for years that the price of being in business is having at least a basic information based webpage (like the mini-websites I'm developing for my various books and services eg: www.ideafarmer.biz). If they can't find you, they can't hire you or purchase what you offer!

Click on this link to order your personal copy: Buy two... save on the shipping and pass on the second one to a friend or colleague.

Last minute notes and thoughts

Toastmasters International conference in Toronto, Ontario this past weekend, saw a sold out crowd in attendance for the World Championship of Public Speaking, on Saturday morning.

I have had the privilege of working behind the scenes, in the coaches corner, for one of the world finalists, Rowena Romero from Calgary, AB. What a delightful, dedicated young woman! Though she did not walk off stage with the ultimate prize, (this year); she delighted and captivated the audience (and even more so in her humorous contestant interview.) She used a step stool as a prop and people were lining up to talk to her and to sign it! I can hardly wait for the DVD to come out mid October.

Rowena is an amazing speaker and a worthy champion in her own right, having won the Regional Championships in Saskatoon ealier this June. That win moved her into the ranks as one of the top 10 Toastmasters International speakers of 2005, garnering a trip to Toronto. I have been very impressed with her style, her sense of humor and timing, as well as her dedication to bringing the best of herself to her captivating presentations. Row is a delight to work with...

I am sure this is not the last we will see of this very talented performer. Remember Rowena... Step into the ring... It's show time!

Actually get to do some speaking in the Edmonton area this month. I love what I do, but it is a nice change to be able to sleep in my own bed!

Saturday, September 10th I'll be the host MC for our CAPS Edmonton Chapter professional development meeting.

We meet at Lister Hall, on the UofA campus. Coffee is on at 8:30AM and the meeting starts at 9AM. Visitor fee is only $35. Parking is available for $4.

This month we have three special guests... my friends Colin and Sandra who co-founded the Mastermind Club (which meets on Wed nights. www.mastermindclubs.com) here in Edmonton and a very special friend and fellow writer, Julie Fergeson (www.beaconlit.com) from Vancouver.

If you've ever thought you had a book inside you, Julie will help you bring it out. Her approach to writing is refreshing and very helpful. Even if you just want to be a better writer, Beacon Literary Services can help. She'll be doing a super session in the afternoon where she will be going deeper into the topic.See you there! Visit: www.capsedmonton.com for more information on CAPS.
