“Dear Bob;

Just thought that you might want to include our review of your presentation in your bio.

We here at the NKBA Northern NJ Chapter were delighted with your light-hearted way of making the information easily accepted.

Challenging the attendees with an interactive question was also very engaging. We hope to see you again the near future in one of your other topics.”

How this all started: I joined NKBA, when I launched my kitchen design career back in the mid 70’s. Actually, it was the A.I.K.D. at that time; NKBA had not been formed yet. J I took a kitchen design course from Bob Oxley, CKD in Boston (1976) and returned to work as a ‘professional’ designer focused on delivering solid value for my clients and raising the bar in our industry. Joined NKBA when it was organized. I rejoined NKBA after an absence (had another business venture for a number of years, as well as a seminar company) and wrote and attained my Certified Kitchen Designer Designation in 1993.

I started my speaking and training adventure, back in the late 1970’s, doing home shows, lunch and learns, show room seminars, and continuing education programs for local schools and colleges.

NKBA launched a Chapter Resource program to list those of us who were able to share our skills and expertise with our various chapters back in the early 1990’s. I eagerly signed up and a new career slowly took flight.

I started speaking to NKBA Chapters and amazingly other professional associations and industries started calling me to speak. And so it began... Jeffrey Miller wrote these kind words after that very first NKBA Chapter engagement.

"'I'm already running as fast as I can!' was both informative and entertaining. It reinforces the ideas of goal setting and effective time management as it applies to one's business and personal life. The information given strengthens the perspective that it's all-important and productive to lead a balanced life, so work does not dominate our life.

The culminating problem-solving activity was enjoyable and beneficial, and showed that through networking with business associates, problems can be readily resolved. Keep up the good work!"

Jeffery Miller, CKD NKBA Arizona Chapter

I realized the lessons and skills I had learned with my own design studio, renovations, working with other manufacturer’s outlets and retail management in the Big Box stores had indeed given me some value-added ideas to share... and share I did!

I have been sharing my Ideas At Work! with NKBA Chapters and other professional audiences in 7 countries, spanning 3 continents to date. I went into speaking and training full time in Feb. of 1998 and the results have been very gratifying. I retired from designing and was granted my CKD-Emeritus status in 2002.

I wrote, promoted and delivered “How to Remodel Your Kitchen… and Stay Married!” for several years in showroom seminars, home shows and local colleges. Subsequently, I have authored 10 additional business, sales, leadership and career development books, in addition to other business tools. I've also had my articles published in North American consumer, corporate, association, on-line and trade publications.

Attendees were very impressed with the visual presentation. I would like to thank you for all your time and expertise in making this year's BC Home Show such a great success."

So, how to get me to your NKBA chapter?

Very simple - just give me a call or email to ask me!

If I am available, I would be pleased to create or tailor a program for your chapter event. Keep in mind my speaking and training calendar does fill with corporate or association engagements, so check my availability early. I will generally cover 2 or 3 chapter events a year, schedule permitting.

How much do I charge?

I have never charged a 'FULL' fee for any NKBA Chapter event. I served on the NKBA Chapter Board for several years when I was designing in Vancouver, BC and realize the budget challenges of bringing in professional versus industry speakers.

I am pleased to support NKBA, whose encouragement has allowed me to build a productive, inspirational keynote speaking, training and leadership coaching career that has taken me to 7 countries on 3 continents, so far. I am pleased to donate a part of my time and expertise, even though I regularly charge in excess of $3500-5000 for similar motivation keynotes or training programs for corporate or association engagements.

I charge a flat $1500 honorarium (plus any applicable taxes) for NKBA Chapter events. I have charged a basic honorarium for the past 9 plus years. I was charging $1000 for many years prior to raising it several years back. I would also need to have my hotel, meals and travel expenses covered by your team. I will be raising (up to $1500) to offset increased expenses in doing these programs. I am pleased to offer it as a substantial saving (about 1/3) from my standard speaking and training fees.

How can you cover this honorarium and my expenses?

Over the years I’ve seen some creative ways used to offset these expenses. I'd like to suggest a couple that will help offset your investment. I have seen these successfully work on numerous occasions and used myself when I was a program chair in various groups and conferences:

1) Recruit a sponsor(s) who agrees to cover my honorarium, travel and/or hotel expenses, in full or part, in exchange for promotion and publicity at your event. I always acknowledge this contribution from the platform, and in my learning guides, to add visible value to their support.

I am open to doing other things to facilitate their appreciation as well. Over the years I have given signed copies of my books, met with them and their teams on-site and given them the use of some of my articles for their team use. For example, Titleist used 6 of my sales articles when they set up their intranet for their North American sales staff a few years back.

There are many ways to enhance this value to a potential sponsor: Inclusion in your printed and on-line programs with live links to their web sites; acknowledgment in my learning guide (handout); banner or signage on-site or in the room; allowing them to insert brochures in your participant’s conference bags; on-site displays, or inclusion on your conference or chapter website. Drop me an e-mail for additional sponsorship ideas.

I’ve had some of my other association clients do this successfully too. For example, I spoke for the CT. Association of Realtors December (2004) and was sponsored by United Parcel Service. Works very well! When I spoke for the NKBA Chapter in Baltimore February (2005), they had a sponsor for part of my fees and expenses.

2) Help secure a corporate or association client for me to address either prior to the event or immediately following it. Put me in touch with a client who agrees to engage me a day before or following your event. I will then be able to offset or cover part of my expenses from their fees and speak at your event (with the possible exception of an additional hotel night or two) at a reduced investment for your chapter.

Visit my motivational keynotes or innovative training programs pages for more details. on the types of keynotes and inspirational training programs I provide for my corporate or association clients. As mentioned above, perhaps a local business or one of your larger suppliers would agree to bring me in for their team? I'd be happy to create something for them on the day of your event, or on either the day prior or day following your NKBA event.

Download the pdf speaker’s information brochure and send that along to a potential sponsor. I’d be happy to talk directly with a potential sponsor, if you would arrange the connection.

Bob is the author of 30 plus success books on various topics to assist in your success.

I’d be pleased to help you create something from this list for your NKBA Chapter event. I’m sure there are other creative funding options out there, so don’t be afraid to suggest an alternative. These are two I’ve seen work successfully.

What it comes down to is this: If you can get me there, cover my nominal flat fee (honorarium), give me a decent place to sleep and feed me J… I’m pleased to visit and share my Ideas At Work! with your NKBA membership.

Your team will get thousands of dollars of my expertise, time and experience at a nominal charge. I get the opportunity to meet people with a similar creative bent and am able to repay a debt of gratitude for NKBA in helping me launch this career that I positively love.
